Jasper County has many opportunities for people to participate in programs such as Master Gardeners, 4-H, diabetes and nutrition programs, and many Ag and natural resources programs. The one exciting new thing in Jasper County is the addition of a Farmers Market beginning May 1, 2010. It will be held every Saturday morning, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the Community Church parking lot at 720 S. Wheeler (hwy 96 one-half mile north of Hwy 190) in Jasper. The market is run by the Jasper County Master Gardeners primarily for local growers to sell farm fresh fruits, vegetables, honey, eggs, plants and flowers, and some hand-made craft items like soap or birdhouses. For more information on the market and what seasonal crops are expected each week, call the Extension office at 409 384-3721. Jasper County is located in East Texas, bordered on the north by San Augustine and Sabine Counties, on the east by Newton County, on the south by Orange County, and on the west by Hardin and Tyler counties. The county seat, Jasper, is 115 miles northeast of Houston and 23 miles west of the Sabine River and Louisiana. Jasper is surrounded by numerous rivers, lakes and national and state forests for fishing, hunting, camping and boating. The 4-H program in Jasper County offers a variety of activities for youth who are in the third grade through 19 years of age. Young people can get involved in project groups, special interest groups or service groups that appeal to their interests. While 4-H meetings that cover a variety of subjects and activities are held periodically, project groups work on one specific subject and last only until the project is completed. Project subjects may include community service, livestock, consumer decision making, horse, food and nutrition, leadership and many more. These project groups are usually directed by Extension staff and volunteer leaders. Jasper County ranks as one of the biggest producers of forestry related products in all of Texas based on gross receipts from timber production. The County still remains fairly diversified agriculturally with many producers in varied areas of interest. However, the other Ag commodities don’t rank as high as the timber. We have beef cattle, hay production, row crops, nurseries and hunting leases. It is our goal and our intent to provide quality, research based information to our producers. We, the Jasper County Extension staff, are proud of Jasper County, the citizens, and surrounding communities. We look forward to working in all areas to make Jasper County an even better place to live and raise a family and enjoy the retirement in the beauty of East Texas. Our commitment will ensure that programs like 4-H, environmental education, natural resource management, community economic development, health and nutrition, family and consumer education, and production agriculture management and marketing will continue in the future. |
